A joint forest management union is a local governance structure responsible for forest management. It is a public entity created by local authorities (communes, departments, regions) and other public and private partners, such as local associations or forest owners.
The main goal of a joint forest management union is to ensure sustainable forest management, by reconciling economic objectives, social and environmental. For that, he can put in place forest management plans, organize silvicultural work, protect forests from fire and disease, and promote biodiversity.
THE SMGF Aydat was created in 1994 for a period of 50 ans. It brings together approximately 360 hectares of rangeland and woods all belonging to village sections, (9 sections). Its union committee is made up of 21 delegates. Its mission is to manage this heritage, ensure its sustainability, define the directions, vote every year on a work program and the budget to be allocated to this work. The purpose of these forests is today more varied than just wood production., today it has multiple challenges beyond the simple silvicultural function : Biodiversity, landscape quality, the capacity to adapt to climate change, the multiplicity of uses (breeding, hunting, hiking and mountain biking, the discovery of nature, leisure activities,…)…
Management of wood cuts on sectionals
9 sections present on the municipal territory including La Garandie, Fontclairant, Fontclairant/Verneuge, Verneuge, Veyreras, The Lot, Rouillas-Bas, Rouillas-Haut and Prades. These areas are mainly made up of forests and are managed by the SMGF of Aydat.
The forest is made up of trees of different ages, species and sizes, and all 8 ans, healthy subjects, sick or dangerous are cut by measuring the harvest to maintain quality wood while preserving landscape stability. These thinnings also provide the necessary light for the stands and the natural establishment of seedlings., thus ensuring the natural regeneration of the forest while securing the forest area. The forest cover is maintained to preserve the wooded atmosphere of the forest, while retaining a sufficient number of old trees necessary for biodiversity and securing the areas most frequented by the public. During slaughter, the crowns and branches are left on site to restore organic matter to the soil, and the logs are transported to storage areas along a road accessible by trucks using a predetermined network of skidding paths. This network is reopened at each operation and is subject to rehabilitation at the end of the work., then returned to its various uses such as walks, sports or leisure activities.
Development projects : Combegrasse, Charmont, La Rodde
The Union has implemented a forest management plan for all managed areas., which is supplemented by a silvicultural development program, pastoral and landscape of the Combegrasse puys, La Rodde and Charmont. After studying the impact of the project on the fauna and flora of the different zones, the objective is to allow public access to these puys while opening up panoramas and privileged observation points.

- Enhancement of the La Rodde and Charmont flows through the natural and progressive appropriation of endemic hardwoods.
This program is part of the dynamic of classifications for the Great Sites of France and UNESCO World Heritage. The third axis of the plan consists of finding a balance between the social function and the preservation of the forest, particularly in the forest areas near the lake and the Treize-Vents crossroads, where high attendance can compromise forest regeneration. The Union's good practices were recognized in 2021 by obtaining the PEFC label, which certifies sustainable forest management. The Union sees this label as a form of encouragement to continue and amplify the actions undertaken within a framework of continuous improvement of its management practices..
